If you get your employees to develop total trust in you and also view you as a model, they would work harder just to be like you. The reason why kids view their parents as their heroes and heroines is because of the trust that the parents have put into the kids, thereby assuming the role of a mentor in the eyes of the parents.
You should learn, develop a cordial relationship with the people around you. After all, you need people around you to rejoice with you after the work has been done. Don’t let deadlines of task and work get between you and the people doing the work.
Remember you don’t need to strive and go out of your way to be good and seem nice. Excellence is by choice and never by force. Don’t try to be cheap to gain people’s respect.
There are two stages of leadership-development, ‘attitudinal realignment’ and ‘Honing of leadership skills’. The main focus of attitudinal realignment is the ‘will to skill’ while the honing of leadership skills focuses on the skills. This is because the skill is normally followed by the will to learn the skill.
Coaching people is never easy. The team might lack the strong will and belief in you, the team and even themselves as an individual. As evident in films like "Coach Carter" , "ChakDe! India" , the people you are trying to train might dislike you at first and even try to rebel against you but you have to stay strong and train them to learn to work for ‘Respect' and never out of fear. You need to let them know that regardless of the individual differences within the team, they can always work together. This is what is used to bring the team spirit and togetherness in the military and it is termed ‘camaraderie’.
